Burton Debuts Olympic Snowboard Team Uniforms

November 22, 2016 10:49:00 AM PST

For the fourth straight year Burton was tasked with creating the uniforms for the US Olympic snowboarding team. From the distressed denim snowboard pants of the Vancouver Olympics to the quilted flag pattern in 2014, Burton's outfits always seem to create quite a buzz. The 2018 PyeongChang outfit is no different. In what is an obvious homage to NASA, Burton debuted a space themed uniform hoping that they will help riders fly higher and to places unknown. The real question is how will these NASA themed snowboarding uniforms be received?

Important Moments in Snowboarding History

July 17, 2014 12:27:00 PM PDT

Ready for a history lesson? Check out this cool Smithsonian piece on important moments in snowboarding history. Though a bit dated, it offers some insight towards how snowboarding grew to become the sport and the industry that it is today.

"Though snowboarding’s roots go back several centuries, its modern development began in the 1960s. In chronological order, here are the top ten moments of snowboarding’s short, radical history … subject to debate of course"

Splitboarding, is it for you?

May 20, 2012 1:01:39 PM PDT

By now many of those engrained in the snowboard culture have come across the newest form of the sport: splitboarding. Designed for those hiking for their turns and constantly searching for fresh lines, splitboarding has been taking the industry by storm. The concept is fairly simple. Take a snowboard, cut it down the middle, add a metal edge, install clips to hold the board together, and suddenly you have both a set of skis and a snowboard. Putting the board to use is a little more interesting. When you un-clip the board you are left with essentially two skis. A skin is then placed on each "ski" allowing the ski to grip to the snow rather than slide. You can now use your grippy skis to start hiking to whatever terrain your heart desires, no snow shoes needed. When you reach your desired drop in point take the skins off the skis, clip them back together to make your snowboard and you're almost set. All you have to do now is set the bindings up. Splitboards use a special binding that allows it to swivel and work as a ski binding when hiking and then pivot so they can be used as snowboard bindings when you're ready to take off down the mountain. This allows you to bring less gear, more quickly switch from hiking mode to riding mode and even makes for easier hiking.

Gnu's 2013 Snowboard Line

February 1, 2012 11:03:53 AM PST

As part of the Wiredsport team I was lucky enough to be able to attend the 2013 SIA Show in Denver, CO and Winter Park, CO at the end of January. This is where companies debut all of their new products for next season and allow retailers to demo the gear and decide what they would like to carry for next year. As a huge supporter of Mervin Manufacturing I dedicated a fair amount of my time to their tent. Let me just say this was time well spent. Check out a review on a couple of their new products in this blog.

Torsional Flex?

December 8, 2011 11:06:21 AM PST

X-mas Stoker Snowboard Giveaway

These days flex is a big point of discussion in the snowboard world. Everybody has their opinion on how to rate flex and a number system to use etc. etc. (this includes us, see our flex rating blog here). However, most of these flex ratings deal with the flex of the board from tip to tail, also called Longitudinal flex. What many people don't know is that a snowboard flexes two ways, tip to tail via longitudinal flex, and it also has torsional flex which is the flex across the width of a snowboard. It is crucial that people are aware of torsional flex, especially beginners as it is what actually allows you to turn and transition from edge to edge. All the knowledge you need can be found inside this post.

X-mas Stoker Snowboard Giveaway

Some of us eagerly wait each year for the new board line ups to come out, ready to pour through the new technology of the year and see just what we can get to improve our ride for the year. However, some of the more casual riders are unaware that despite nearly 20 years of little to no advancement in snowboard technology, the past 5 years or so have brought around improvements at a speed only equaled by electronics.

Here we will discuss my favorite advancement, Magne-Traction. If you dont know what this is yet be sure to read this. It will change your snowboarding life, we guarentee it.
